I am Carol Korfin a.k.a. The Glass Giraffe. My husband and I have lived in San Diego since 1981. We were both born in New Jersey and lived in Saratoga Springs, NY and Orlando, FL before moving here.
I have always had artsy tendencies, but they were applied to crafts to keep myself busy and to my children and their friends, through scouting and other groups. Later I began decorating and redecorating our homes, as well as my daughter and son’s homes. My grandchildren have especially benefited from my decorating bent, by my doing their rooms multiple times as they went from babies to youngsters to teens.
Then I retired and got serious about my favorite form of art. Glass! I took a class locally and was immediately hooked. I took more classes and my imagination started creating more pieces than my hands (and kiln) could handle. So I got busy!
I create one-of-a-kind Fused Glass Art - no two pieces are ever exactly alike. I chose my name by fusing my love of all things giraffe with my love of glass art. I have a giraffe collection numbering over 150 pieces.
Each piece of glass art that I design is lovingly created in my head before drawing and cutting the elements from the finest quality glass and firing it in a kiln made especially for glass fusing. Many pieces require multiple firings to achieve the designs and textures to my satisfaction. The final firing (called slumping) is when the piece takes it finished form as a dish, bowl, vase, animal, pendant, etc. I use a variety of glass types such as translucent, opaque, dichroic, iridescent, frit, millefiore, confetti, rods, stringers and noodles. My pieces are limited only by what my imagination inspires and the size of my kiln (it’s pretty big!).
Please enjoy looking at my work! I look forward to having one of my whimsical creations go home to live with you and give you as much pleasure as I have had making it. If you see an item you really like but have a different color preference, please visit my website www.glassgiraffe.com or contact me at carol@glassgiraffe.com or (858) 793-5482 and I can do a custom piece for you.
